With Halloween fast approaching, we are winding down our series of horror and sci-fi soundtrack reviews and this time well focus on the 2004 remake of George Romeros classic film, Dawn of the Dead which was an enjoyable film being an faithful homage to the brilliant 1978 film. With Zach Snyder at the helm and James Gunn writing his own updated script, this time the film is set in Wisconsin, as a group of displaced citizens led by Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Mekahi Pfeffier, Matt Frewer and Jake Weber take refuge inside a mega shopping mall along with more survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies that keep multiplying by the minute. Soon these group of ra&nb

After providing scores to the films Get Carter, Rated X and the very impressive, City of Ghosts , Tyler Bates was somewhat of an usual choice for this film, but as hes displayed in recent years, this film was a major stepping stone for later projects like 300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch (

all with Synder) and the remake of the Day The Earth Stood Still. For this score, Bates combi asics gt nes electronics and a substantial amount of orchestrial forces to generate tension, suspense and terror that is the both the plight of the survivors and also the forboding voice the zombie plague thats over taking them slowly. Early on in this album, Bates e onitsuka tiger mexico 66 trainers stablishes the mood and terror that Anna played by Polley experiences when she wakes up to the nightmare that the plague has caused (Brainscan, Hell On Earth, Gunman, Anna Drives and Were Going To The Mall) as well as her plight to get to the mall and try to find a way to survive like the other survivors also seeking refuge.
After that Bates, really cranks up the terror and suspense two notches as tension, turmoil amongst the survivors begins to unravel (Dont Give Him That Gun!, America Always Sorts Its Shit Out , Maybe Theyre Coming For Us, Its Only A Matter Of Time, You Wanna Kill My Family) and an overload of zombies being to cause havoc as they try to get into the mall (We Have To Do Something Now, Ludas Transformation, Im Not A Plumber). Each sequence is scored very effectively as the orchestra and electronics play off each other harshly at times and terrifying in others. Enjoy The Sunrise is an effective and elegaic ending to both the album and the film as Bates gives you a moment of somber reflect and relief of sorts to those who survived the ordeal and to those lost because of it. Milan Records album which is one that is long in coming, is a lenghty and surprisingly solid affair and easily one of Tyler Bates best scores around. I just like the way he fully utlizes the orchestra in this score unlike his others with Day The Earth Stood Still being another exception. Dawn of the Dead is a very effective and terrifying score that really does work the more you listen to it in and out of the film. This is a very solid album that will please both fans of the film and horror score fans in general. Recommended.
