The film focuses on families who are looking for alternatives to their poor public schools. A common solution many of these poor families face is whats called a charter school. For those who dont know, a charter school is not a private school but a school thats not burdened by teachers union rules and regulations yet is funded by the government like a public school. However, there are very few spots open in these schools and we see these families as they put their childs future to the luck of the draw. Milwaukee is featured in the documentary as a student videotaped conditions in a Milwaukee classroom in the early 90s and a teacher was reading as kids were goofing off and shooting craps in the bac

k of the classroom. The superintendent said that he would fire the teachers responsible. He came head to head with the union who had a rule of tenure. Guggenheim also directed the superior documentary An Inconvenient Truth and like that one people may leave feeling hopeless although Guggenheim says that the power is in the communitys hands. In the end its not about private schools or putting kids into charter or seed schools. Its not about throwing money at public schools. Its about trying to come up with rational solutions that have the best interests of the children in mind.
Waiting For Superman won the audience award at the Milwaukee Film Fest this year. Viewers should definitely make the time to see the film and judge for themselves and decide whether they are up to the call that Guggenheim is putting forth.
Bottom Line: Waiting For Superman is an impressive documentary that dissects problems with the school system and while it doesnt offer easy solutions, it says that the solutions must come from community involvement.
